2015 Mazda 3 2.2 diesel with a write-off record and coolant going missing

Only 48,777 km and it drove well, but one database flagged a write-off, the paint gauge found two repaired impacts and the coolant was very low.

Photos from the inspection 8

This 2015 Mazda 3 2.2 Skyactiv-D GT had covered only 48,777 km and drove very well on our road test. Before the inspection the seller stated he had owned it since new and that it had never had an accident. One national history database records it as a write-off, and our inspector found a repaired front impact and a separate repair along the passenger side, along with very low coolant and engine oil that smelled of diesel.

The car

The Mazda has the 2,191 cc 150PS diesel engine and a six-speed manual gearbox. It was registered new in Ireland in 2015, so it is not an import. The mileage history showed no discrepancy, and the low recent use fits a car that has been untaxed since June 2025. It came with two keys but no service book, and the NCT was valid to July 2027.

The records do not match the seller's account. The first owner kept the car until January 2025. It then passed through two garages before the current owner bought it in February 2025. One history report records damage in late 2024, while the first owner still had it, and a write-off with no category stated. The other report shows no damage record.

What we found

Two repaired impacts

  • Front bumper, both front wings and the bonnet repaired or repainted. The right front wing read 400 microns of paint, well above a factory finish.
  • The front crash bar behind the bumper had been repaired, in a different colour from the car and with bolt heads marked from removal.
  • Both headlamps damaged and repaired.
  • Both passenger-side doors repainted, with signs they had been removed, and the passenger-side sill repaired along its full length.
  • Left rear wing repainted, with minor damage still visible.

The repaired crash bar matters most. It sits behind the bumper cover, so the front impact went deeper than a scrape. The front structure was not measured on a jig, so a wheel alignment check is advised.

Coolant and oil

The coolant level was very low, with traces of coolant in the engine bay, and the source could not be found. Coolant either leaks out or is being burned, and on this engine family the head gasket is a reported weak point. A cooling system pressure test and a combustion gas test will show which. Once warm, the engine also made a light knocking noise that could not be pinned to one area.

The engine oil was above the maximum mark and smelled of diesel. Fuel in the oil, called oil dilution, thins it and reduces the protection it gives. It is a known issue on this engine, and a full service is needed now.

Other findings

  • All four tyres from 2022, cracking in the tread, apparently second-hand and all low on pressure, with a nail in the rear left.
  • Rear brake discs heavily rusted and not cleaned up by firm braking on the road test.
  • Air conditioning not cooling, with a pressure reading of -10 kPa consistent with an empty system.
  • Widespread surface rust underneath, not structural at the moment.

What it would cost

The full list comes to €1,770 to €3,020, of which the must-do items (full service, coolant tests and four tyres) account for €860 to €1,320. That does not include any head gasket repair if the combustion gas test is positive, any air conditioning leak repair, or further work the coolant or alignment checks may reveal.

Our verdict

Conditional pass, subject to rectification. The car should only be bought once four conditions are met: the write-off category confirmed in writing, the cooling system pressure and combustion gas tests done, a full service carried out, and all four tyres replaced. If the write-off category or the coolant test comes back badly, our inspector's advice is to walk away.

There was a lot that was good. The engine started well from cold, pulled strongly, and the gearbox and clutch were smooth. All 14 control units came back clean after the road test. The injectors showed balanced corrections with no leaks or soot, and the particulate filter was clean.

Buying a used Mazda 3 diesel in Ireland: what to check

  • Check the oil level and smell the dipstick. Oil dilution with diesel is a known issue on the 2.2 Skyactiv-D, and a rising oil level is the warning sign.
  • Check the coolant level and look for coolant traces. Head gasket problems are reported on pre-2016 engines, and a combustion gas test is cheap compared with the repair.
  • Read the particulate filter data. Blockage is a known issue on this engine, so look at soot load, regeneration count and warning lamp history.
  • Ask a Mazda dealer to check the chassis number for outstanding recalls. Recalls from 2014 to 2016 apply to this model, and completion is not always documented.

A low-mileage car that drives well can still carry a history that only a paint gauge and two history reports will bring out.
