2014 Nissan Navara with around 200,000 km missing from the clock
355,000 km on the records. The clock showed 152,515 km
The dashboard said 152,515 km. The service book, a Nissan dealer and the national register said far more, and the rear chassis was rotting from the inside.
Photos from the inspection 8
This 2014 Nissan Navara 2.5 dCi LE Double Cab showed 152,515 km on its dashboard when our inspector examined it. Service records, a Nissan dealer and the national mileage register all pointed to a far higher figure, with the service book alone recording up to 355,000 km back in 2018. Add structural corrosion inside the rear chassis rails, and this pickup failed our inspection.
The car
The truck has the YD25DDTi 2.5 litre diesel (2,488 cc), a 6-speed manual gearbox and selectable 4x4 with low range. It was built in Spain and first registered in Ireland in 2014, so it is not an import. It had five private owners before passing to a garage. The history checks found no write-off, insurance damage record or taxi use. The exceptions were the mileage, a resale only 14 days after the previous change of owner, and a run of short tax periods since 2023.
What we found
The odometer reading is not genuine
Every independent record shows the truck has covered more than the 152,515 km displayed:
- National mileage register, January 2016: 28,900 km.
- Service book: records up to 355,000 km in 2018.
- National mileage register, January 2020: 117,500 km.
- A Nissan dealer whose stamps are in the service book, contacted by phone by our inspector: about 208,000 km in 2022.
- Two readings entered on the register on the same day in September 2026, when the vehicle changed owner: 198,503 km and 152,464 km.
The records do not all agree with each other, but they agree on the key point: the truck had far more kilometres in the past than it shows now, and a reading cannot go down in normal use. The pedals, gear knob and steering wheel were extremely worn, and a turbo that appears new, ball joints and track rod ends are repairs we would not expect at the displayed figure. Our inspector believes the real distance could be close to 400,000 km.
Rear chassis corroded from the inside
The chassis has a protective coating on the outside, but inside the box-section rails at the rear the metal is heavily corroded. When our inspector probed inside the rails with a screwdriver, corroded pieces came out. The front of the chassis was in good condition. The underbody coating had not been applied professionally, and this is a structural repair that needs a proper quote before further use.
Other findings
- Front tyres: front left 2 mm of tread, front right 3.52 mm, both from 2021. The legal minimum is 1.6 mm.
- Several engine oil leaks, including the sump and rocker cover, and injectors sweating and slightly leaking diesel.
- Blue smoke from the exhaust on the first acceleration, less afterwards.
- Front left driveshaft boot split.
- The rear window would not close and its switch did not work, so the vehicle could not be locked.
- Rear right lamp damaged and cracking on the outside of the cab.
- Fault codes for the front oxygen sensor and the battery current sensor, plus a past communication fault. No current codes, and the engine warning lamp was off.
What it would cost
The jobs needed now come to €1,590 to €3,190, plus 3 items that need a quote, with the chassis and the cab first. Planned work later adds €250 to €380, plus a timing chain kit if an inspection confirms wear. None of this fixes the odometer, which no repair can put right.
Our verdict
Fail, do not purchase in current condition. Two findings decide it on their own: an odometer reading that is not genuine, and structural corrosion inside the rear chassis. Even with every repair done, the truck would still carry an unknown and much higher real mileage, so our advice was to walk away and look for another example.
There were good points. The engine felt solid and pulled with good power, gear changes were smooth and the clutch bite was normal. All 13 exterior panels measured as original paint. Fluid levels were good and the rear tyres were from 2025 with 7 mm of tread.
Buying a used Navara in Ireland: what to check
- Probe inside the chassis rails at the rear, around the suspension mounts and between the cab and the load bed. Corrosion from the inside is a known weak point of this Navara generation, and an outside coating can hide it.
- Listen for timing chain rattle from a cold start. Chain stretch is the best-known fault of the YD25 engine, and we recommend inspecting the chain from 150,000 km.
- Look for diesel sweating around the injectors. Injector seal leaks are a common wear point on this engine.
- Compare the odometer with the service book, past CVRT readings and the national mileage register, and call the garages that stamped the book if anything looks off.
Original paint and a tidy cab told only part of this story; the service book, a phone call and a screwdriver inside the chassis told the rest.
