The hybrid battery read very well and it drove smoothly, but the national register had it at 165,000 km months before it showed 116,466 km.

Photos from the inspection 6

This 2015 Toyota Esquire Hybrid showed 116,466 km on the dashboard, but the Irish national mileage register held a reading of 165,000 km for the same car from May 2026. A car cannot un-drive 48,534 km. Our inspector also found a live braking system fault, an oil leak at the back of the engine and steering joints losing their grease, all pointing to a car that has worked far harder than the dashboard admits.

The car

The Esquire is a seven-seat MPV with the 2ZR-FXE 1,790 cc petrol hybrid engine, a CVT automatic gearbox and front-wheel drive. It was first registered in Japan in 2015 and imported to Ireland in 2022, and has had five owners here, with three changes of hands in its first three months. There was no service history from either country, only one key, and the road tax had expired ten months earlier. The Japanese history report was clear of crash, fire, flood and theft.

The inspection had real limits. The car arrived already running with the engine very hot, so no cold start was possible. The fault codes had been cleared by the seller about nine hours earlier, with the 12 volt battery disconnected at the same point, and only 12 km driven since. Part way through, the seller stopped the inspection and gave our inspector about ten minutes to finish, so the 130-point checklist could not be completed item by item.

What we found

A mileage record that goes backwards

  • 2018, Japanese government inspection: 57,600 km.
  • 2020, Japanese government inspection: 91,800 km.
  • 2022, Japanese auction: 95,281 km.
  • October 2025, Irish national mileage database: 109,998 km.
  • May 2026, Irish national mileage register: 165,000 km.
  • August 2026, Irish national mileage register: 105,000 km.
  • At our inspection: 116,466 km.

Cartell returns a mileage discrepancy. An odometer cannot go backwards in normal use, and a 60,000 km drop between May and August 2026 cannot be explained by ordinary driving.

Physical wear that supports the record

  • Oil seepage behind the engine and slight weeping around the injectors.
  • Track rod ends and ball joints leaking grease, a wear pattern normally seen on high-distance cars.
  • A possible oil leak from the top of the left front strut.
  • A dirty, worn interior with five cigarette burns in the driver seat, already noted on the Japanese auction sheet in 2022.
  • Taxi-type fittings left on the dashboard. No taxi or hackney record exists for this car, but our inspector considers unregistered private hire use likely. That is an assessment, not a database record.

Our inspector's estimate, from the condition and the record together, is that the real distance is at least 175,000 km and possibly close to 200,000 km.

Diagnostics

Within 12 km of the seller's code clear, 11 codes had returned across 8 computers. Most were consistent with the battery disconnection, but one was not: a live circuit fault on the rear right wheel speed sensor, which feeds the anti-lock brakes, stability control and traction control. The Japanese record also shows a manufacturer recall on the hybrid fuel pump.

What it would cost

The repairs and jobs listed come to €2,390 to €5,430, covering the wheel speed sensor, the engine oil leak and injector seals, the steering joints, the strut top, two front tyres, a full service, a second key, two dents and the interior. No cost is attached to the mileage, because no repair addresses it.

Our verdict

Fail, do not purchase in current condition. This is not a conditional pass: the distance this car has actually covered is not established, and both the record and the physical condition point to it being far higher than shown.

The positives were genuine. All fourteen hybrid battery blocks sat within 0.019 V of each other with even internal resistance, which is what a healthy pack looks like. The engine recorded zero misfires and no fault codes of its own. On the road it was smooth and quiet, with no warning lights and normal braking. The paint was original on every panel, with only two unrepaired dents.

Buying a used Esquire in Ireland: what to check

  • Compare the Japanese auction sheet and inspection records with Irish mileage register entries. Most Esquires here are Japanese imports, so the full chain of readings is usually available.
  • Have the hybrid battery read block by block. Battery health percentage is not available through third-party tools, so voltage spread and internal resistance are the practical guide.
  • Check the car's chassis number with Toyota Ireland for any open recall, such as the hybrid fuel pump recall recorded on this car.
  • MPVs like this are popular for private hire work, so look for leftover fittings or wiring on the dashboard and for heavy interior wear.

A good test drive and a healthy battery reading only tell you how a car behaves today; the records tell you how far it has really travelled.
