2014 Toyota Prius Japanese import with a healthy hybrid battery and no red flags
0.1 V spread across 14 hybrid battery sections
All 14 hybrid battery sections sat within 0.1 V of each other, the scan was clean after the drive and the tyres were new. The front drop links were the only real job.
Photos from the inspection 6
This 2014 Toyota Prius was a Japanese import that had arrived in Ireland only a couple of months before we saw it, with 81,697 km on the clock. It passed our inspection without conditions. The hybrid battery was evenly balanced, the electronics were clean after the road test and the car drove extremely well. The main job was a pair of worn front drop links.
The car
This is the third generation Prius, model code ZVW30, in S grade. It has the 2ZR-FXE 1.8 litre petrol engine working with two electric motor-generators, 136 bhp combined, and a hybrid transaxle that gives smooth, stepless drive to the front wheels. The engine uses a timing chain and has no auxiliary drive belt. The car was first registered in Japan in February 2014 and registered in Ireland in August 2026. Part of its Japanese service record was seen at the inspection, which is often hard to obtain for an import. The Irish history checks showed no write-off or damage record and no mileage discrepancy, the NCT was fresh and the car was taxed.
What we found
A healthy hybrid system
The nickel metal hydride hybrid battery is made of 14 sections. Between the highest and lowest section the spread was 0.1 V, internal resistance was a very even 0.02 to 0.021 ohm, and the battery computer held no faults. The inverters, the boost converter and both electric water pumps were working with no faults and low temperatures. The engine recorded zero misfires on all four cylinders and needed only small fuel corrections.
A clean scan
Our scan reached 21 control units and found 3 codes: a parking lock actuator code, a brake fluid level code and a past driver window switch code. The brake fluid level was good, park worked normally and all the windows worked. After clearing and a road test, all 21 units were clean. The engine computer showed 38,045 km since its fault memory was last cleared, so nobody had wiped the codes shortly before we arrived. On a Prius a parking lock code is commonly associated with a weak 12 volt battery, so we advised testing it at the service.
The jobs
- Both front anti-roll bar drop links were worn out. The car had passed its NCT with them, but our inspector did not consider them safe to leave. Replace both straight after purchase.
- The car pulled slightly to one side and the steering wheel was not centred, so a four-wheel alignment should follow the drop links.
- A small oil leak around an engine sensor, which can be resealed with a new washer.
- A damaged rubber seal on the driver's door frame, and a white mark inside the front right headlamp to keep an eye on.
The bonnet and left front wing read 200 microns and the right rear door 250 microns, so those three panels were repainted in the past, with no sign of filler and no accident recorded. Some other areas read under 50 microns, consistent with past machine polishing, so the paint should not be machine polished again.
What it would cost
The report puts the work now at €600 to €1,120, most of it routine: the drop links, the alignment, a full service with spark plugs and a 12 volt battery test, the oil seep and the door seal. Planned maintenance later, including the engine and inverter coolant and the hybrid transaxle oil if there is no record of them, comes to €820 to €1,440.
Our verdict
Pass, recommended for purchase, with no conditions. Our inspector found no significant red flags and would consider buying the car himself. The four tyres were new 2026 tyres with 6.5 mm of tread, the brakes were barely worn, the fluids were in good order and the interior had been very well maintained. The only paperwork points were to ask for the second key and to confirm in writing that there is no finance on the car, as that check was still pending.
Buying a used Prius in Ireland: what to check
- Have the hybrid battery read section by section. The battery health percentage is not available to independent scan tools, so the voltage spread and internal resistance are the practical guide.
- Test the 12 volt battery. A weak one causes start-up and electronic faults on a Prius.
- Check the front drop links and the wheel alignment. Worn drop links are a common wear item on this model.
- On a Japanese import, ask a Toyota dealer for a VIN check. This car's chassis number fell inside three Japanese hybrid software campaigns, and completion in Japan was not confirmed.
- Plan for the exhaust gas recirculation valve, cooler and intake to be cleaned at about 100,000 km. Deposits there are a known weak point of this engine.
A good result is still worth having on paper before you pay, because it tells you exactly which small jobs to budget for.
