2014 Renault Clio with an undeclared body repair and an engine low on oil
2,000+ µm of filler in a door aperture, on no record
It drove beautifully and the gearbox was healthy. But the oil was a litre down, the exhaust smoked blue and filler sat where the auction sheet showed damage.
Photos from the inspection 5
This 2014 Renault Clio 1.2 TCe automatic was a Japanese import with genuine low mileage and a gearbox in very good health. It still failed our inspection. The engine was about a litre below its minimum oil mark with light blue smoke at the exhaust, and a heavy filler repair sat in the left rear door aperture, a repair that appears on no record and that the seller did not mention.
The car
The Clio has the H5F 1,197 cc turbocharged petrol engine, which uses a timing chain, and the 6-speed EDC dual clutch automatic. It was first registered in Japan in December 2014 and registered in Ireland in August 2026, with 70,885 km on the clock. That figure is genuine: two separate control units in the car and the Japanese auction appraisal from February 2026 all agree. There was no service book and no service records. The Irish history checks showed no write-off and no accident or damage record.
What we found
An engine showing its known weak points
The oil level was below the minimum mark on the dipstick, roughly one litre down, and the instrument cluster had logged the same fault on its own. The oil service indicator had been reset only about 221 km earlier. On the road test, light blue smoke was visible from the exhaust, which on a petrol engine is the sign of oil being burnt. There was also an oil leak at the bottom of the timing chain cover area.
This engine family is known for oil consumption and timing chain wear, and low oil shortens chain life. The engine was already hot when we arrived, so the cold start, the moment a worn chain is easiest to hear, could not be checked. The electronic chain readings were positive. The engine start count of 11,422 against 70,885 km works out at about one start every six kilometres, a life of very short trips.
A repair nobody declared
The whole car has been repainted. In the left rear door aperture the gauge went out of range above 2,000 microns because of heavy filler. The Japanese auction appraisal from February 2026 marked a dent with scratching at its heaviest grade in that same area and declared no repair history. The seller stated the car had had no accidents. No panel was cut, welded or replaced, but the repair does not appear on any Irish database, so a future buyer will not find it either.
Tyres, brakes and smaller items
- All four tyres had legal tread, 4.27 to 4.61 mm, but were cracked and perished across the tread and into the sidewalls. Our inspector advised against driving it in the wet until they are replaced.
- Front brake discs 50% worn, scored and marked.
- Coolant very watery, giving reduced corrosion and freeze protection.
- Air conditioning cooling weakly, with a stored compressor control circuit fault.
The scan found 7 stored faults and none active. Most matched a car shipped with its battery disconnected; the oil level fault was the exception, because the dipstick confirmed it.
What it would cost
The report puts the work identified at €1,840 to €4,160: tyres and alignment, an oil service and consumption test, resealing the timing chain cover, a compression and leak down test, front brakes, coolant, the air conditioning and the smaller items. Any internal engine or timing chain work found by those tests is extra and cannot be costed until the condition is known.
Our verdict
Fail, do not purchase in current condition. Two separate reasons drove it: an engine already showing the known oil and chain signatures of its family, without the cold start check that would settle the question, and an undeclared filler repair to the structure of the door aperture. On top of that, the tyres made the car unsafe in the wet as it stood.
The good points were real. It drove very well, with smooth gear changes, no judder and straight braking. The dual clutch gearbox, a known weak point on automatic Clios of this generation, was clean on the scan and on the road. The airbag unit records no impact. The mileage is genuine and the panels are the original pressings.
Buying a used Clio in Ireland: what to check
- Find out which engine you are looking at. The 1.2 TCe turbo uses a timing chain, while the non-turbo 1.2 uses a belt, and a history report can mix them up, as one did for this car.
- On the 1.2 TCe, check the oil level before the engine is started and ask to hear a genuine cold start. Oil consumption and timing chain wear are known weak points, with oil consumption reported mainly on engines built from 2012 to 2016.
- On EDC automatics, watch for judder from rest and jerky low speed shifts, the gearbox's known weak point.
- On a Japanese import, compare the auction sheet's damage diagram with the car in front of you.
- Look at tyre condition and age, not just tread depth.
A car can drive beautifully on a short test and still hide problems that no database records.
